Situated close to the last remaining part of Sherwood Forest with the ancient Major Oak, the large village of Edwinstowe has grown over the past century to accommodate the
families of miners. The working pit of Thoresby lies within the Parish. St. Mary's Church, with its tall spire, has been the local House of God for many centuries. Its interior has been tastefully
brought into the modern age.
St John the Evangelist is on the edge of the hamlet of Perlethorpe on the Thoresby estate. This imposing building in a very rural setting has one of the oldest registers of births, marriages and deaths in the United Kingdom. St John's
continues to be a centre of Christian worship.

TO GET TO ST JOHN THE EVANGELIST, PERLETHORPE
BUS: Here there is a problem as the infrequent bus has been withdrawn. It is a three mile walk from Ollerton roundabout (by MacDonalds) alomg the busy (but pretty) A614 to the Perlethorpe turn then through the hamlet to the
Church (though turning off the A614 sooner (where cars are not allowed) would shorten the distance). The following Stagecoach buses pass Ollerton roundabout: 14/15 (Mansfield - Clipstone - Edwinstowe - Ollerton - Kirton/Walesby); 33 (The Sherwood
Arrow) (Nottingham - Farnsfield - Bilsthorpe - Edwinstowe - Ollerton - Worksop). Veolia (Dunn Line) 32/32A (Newark - Ollerton) (not Sunday) passes Old Ollerton Hop Pole, adding about 400 metres to your walk. For timetables,

CAR: The turn to Perlethorpe is clearly signposted on the A614. If you are heading towards Doncaster, it is on the left 2.5 miles north of Ollerton. If you are heading south towards Nottingham, look for a right turn
shortly after the roundabout (Thoresby right; Bothamsall left). Please
