St. Barnabas, Pleasley Hill, in the Deanery of Mansfield

In the 1870's the Pleasley coal mine was sunk. Many houses were built for the miners and the Church of St. Barnabas was consecrated in 1895 to serve their spiritual needs. The Church stands amongst the houses in Bagshaw Street, visible from the busy Chesterfield Road below. Though long closed, the coal pit headstocks and chimney are being preserved and fill the skyline as you head from Mansfield down the hill into Pleasley. The terraced houses are gradually being replaced, adding new life to this area, which already boasts a magnificent community centre below the Church. Pleasley Hill, on the border of Derbyshire, shares its priest with St. Augustine, Mansfield.
